Oh awards shows, what a mess! The Grammys, of course, were no different. There’s been a ton of buzz about Macklemore’s performance of Same Love, what it means that he won Best Rap Album, all streaming into a larger conversation around his place as a white man calling out homophobia in hip hop.
Well I’m here to tell you: queer and trans folks of color? We don’t need a white savior. We’re speaking for ourselves, and though the Grammy’s might not often listen, our voices are important and they are awesome. For your post-Grammy blues, here’s a playlist of QTPOC artists that have been making amazing music in the past few years. It is woefully incomplete – I’m between workshops at the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force’s Creating Change conference right now and I just threw this together, but I know we all need a pick-me-up after that sorry night of mostly white dudes giving each other awards. I promise a future QPTOC Jamz playlist with even more amazing goodies in the future.
Enjoy!
Verónica promises to get you more QTPOC jamz soon!
